Technical seminars at this year’s Surfex

Posted on 24 May 2022

Surfex is back and better than ever! Having overseen the development of the show’s biggest and broadest set of technical seminars, here’s a quick rundown of what to expect from the programme.

Industry Insight

Transition to British REACH, sustainability, event paint recycling and regulatory issues are all up for discussion as part of Industry Insights. Updates are being provided by British Adhesives & Sealants Association, (BASA) The British Coatings Federation (BCF), Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association, Chemical Business Association and Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA).

TechFocus

Formulators and technical managers won’t want to miss TechFocus! Set to be an opportunity for exhibitors to promote their most innovative products and services, the programme is filled with the latest advances in technology including innovative additives, sustainable resins, and radiation curing.

The Cutting Edge

Designed to encourage greater collaboration between academia and industry The Cutting Edge will see universities provide details on the latest research into how we can make chemicals and chemical production a lot more sustainable and cost-effective. Featuring showcases from the UK’s leading universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, Birmingham, Durham, Cranfield, Manchester Metropolitan & UCL. Discussions will focus on scientific research into coatings, facilities and expertise. OCCA’s academic partners Salford and Warwick University will be discussing XPS, Disruptive Technology, Functional Coatings, Thermal Paints and Antimicrobial resistance.

Surfacing Science

One of the seminars I’ve worked closely on is the collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry- Surface Coatings Group as part of the Surfacing Science presentations.  OCCA, BSI and Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre will be presenting on a range of topics. Really exciting talks on bacteria in coatings, sustainable solvents, glass coatings, surface characterisation, graphene and the circular economy will challenge what you thought about coatings.

With such a broad range of technical subjects, I’m pleased to say that it doesn’t matter what area of paints and coatings you operate in, whether regulatory, technical, or commercial there will be something for you.
